I picked up my first calligraphy brush when I was 6, in a small town in Hokkaido, Japan, and I still hold calligraphy brush, now so many different ones with many stories with each one, on the other side of the globe.
Traveling across the world with my brushes, I have been on a journey to express and communicate my voice, poetry, visions, music, cultural heritage, identity – and leaning lasting traces on blank papers.
I’ll be speaking about my journey with my brushes on Stay Curious Café @staycurio.us by @btconf hosted by Marc Thiele, along with amazing @redhongyi, who’s known as “the artist paints without a paintbrush”.
April 7th at 8am Los Angeles Time / 5pm Berlin Time / 11pm Malaysia Time.

Upcoming Live Performances at nowJapan 2018 in Vilnius, Lithuania
[/rs_special_text][vc_column_text]I’m excited to announce my upcoming conceptual live calligraphy performances at nowJapan2018, the largest Japanese cultural festival in the Baltic region, in Vilnius, Lithuania on September 8th – 9th, 2018.
Celebrating its 10th anniversary of the festival and 100 years anniversary of the independence of Lithuania this year, nowJapan will take place in the central part of Vilnius – The Old Town, the UNESCO-inscribed one of the largest surviving medieval old towns in Northern Europe. The cobble stones, narrow streets, old palaces, countless churches in Baroque architecture — It has been inspiring to explore the city, learn the history, feel the culture here in Lithuania and I am excited and very curious see how the modern and traditional Japanese culture is be celebrated with people in the Baltic States in this historical part of the Vilnius.
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]
I will be performing with dancers from Dance Theater PADI DAPI Fish, a Lithuanian contemporary dance company based in Klaipėda, accompanied by Marius Sakavičius, Vilnius-based cellist, and original sound composition by Corey Fuller, Tokyo-based sound artist on both days, on September 8th and 9th at Vilniaus Rotušė (Vilnius Town Hall). This performance will be an unique collaboration of Japanese calligraphy, Lithuanian contemporary dancers and music, celebrating the cultural heritage and its evolution in modern society. Inspired by the idea of independence, this collaborative performance explores the stages of our lives to search for “self” in three segments: journeys through the past, the present, and the awakening. Through the collaborative process, I aim to seek and learn how the idea of individual, community, society, and country differs from one another, and shares the similar value with one another, and to transform this cultural discourse into an artistic expression.
I will also be giving a talk about Japanese calligraphy and my creative process on Saturday at Philharmonic Hall, and teaching calligraphy workshop on Sunday at Town Hall.

Born in the US and raised in Japan, Corey Fuller is a musician and multimedia artist from Tokyo, Japan. Growing up between several different cultures and traveling extensively as a child have made geography and a sense of place major components of Fuller’s music. His work is a slow and gradual music composed of infinitesimal details comprised of processed and delicately treated acoustic instruments, field recordings, and other sound sources. In addition to his work as a solo artist, Fuller finds his collaborations with other artists invaluable. Beyond Tellerrand takes place in Düsseldorf, Berlin, and for this winter, they embarked on a new adventure in Munich at for its first edition at Münchener Künstlerhaus, from January 16th – 17th. I spoke as one of the “inspiration” speakers on the last slot of the first day in the evening.
The venue Münchener Künstlerhaus, literally translates as “Munich House of Artists”, was such a beautiful place with lots of historical charms throughout the building. The atmosphere of Beyond Tellerrand was very welcoming, exciting, upbeat (most definitely thanks to Baldower, who editing the mix live, with the quotes from the talks as samples that he just recorded – as he calls it “sound sketch notes”! Such a fun idea, it was something to look forward to after every talk, especially as a speaker ;)). Marc Thiele, the organizer of beyond tellerrand, has welcomed us to the stage with a little personal episode as an introduction. He made sure that everyone was feeling warmly welcomed and his love for connecting people really resonated with everyone – thank you your such hospitality, Marc!
I’ve met wonderful creative minds through this conference / trip, including dina Amin, Simon Collison & Geri Coady, Stefan Sagmeister, Carla Diana, Vitaly Friedmann, Nadieh Bremer, Mark Robbins and Christian Heilmann. You can watch the vides of the talks here – if you are interested in or work in the field of stop motion animation, industrial design, graphic design, web design, data visualization, front-end design and coding, internet security… you’ll find these talks inspiring and there’s a lot you can learn. And you can get a glimpse of the conference and all behind-the-scenes stories here.
I had a wonderful time in beautiful Munich. I very much enjoyed my stay, and hope to return again!
You can watch the video of my talk below. Hope you enjoy, and learn something new about Japanese calligraphy :-)[/vc_column_text][rs_special_text tag=”h2″ font_style=”italic” font_size=”40px” font_color=”#000000″]
