    Featured Interview in Violet

I’m in Violet Japan Issue 04: Ever As Just Sure. I’m flattered to be part of this beautiful issue with talented women around the world with visions and powerful voices. It’s encouraging and empowering to learn other female artists’ views on the idea of gender and social status in their creative fields. It made me reevaluate the importance of what I do as a female calligrapher. Thank you Yuki Uenaka & Kaori Nishida for your visit to my studio all the way from Tokyo!

The adventurous founder of TDK, Frankie Ratford and I met at -ing Creatives Festival in Dubai back in April, and we shared an amazing times together at the conference. It’s amazing how the world is getting smaller and smaller, and how we can stay in touch over the internet world, wherever we are on this planet.

For their featured artists’ interview, they asked me some fun questions. While talking about my “earliest creative memories”, it took me to all the memories of my childhood in Hokkaido, and it was hard to make it into a nice and sweet, short answer… but yes, what I’m doing now and 5-6 years old self are almost the same, maybe a little grown-up version. Living now in Berkeley, California, I miss Hokkaido so much. I’m so blessed and so fortunate to have these opportunities to share my little fantasies with everyone, including you, who’s reading this. Thank you for stopping by, I really appreciate your time. Ok, it’s time to go back to the nature for me now, I’m going to camping tomorrow into the wilderness of California.

    陰翳_北海道新聞_1
My on-going solo exhibition “陰翳 IN-EI: The Resonance of Shadows” was featured in Hokkaido Newspaper, evening edition on March 1st.  The article briefly summarizes my background and artist activities in foreign countries.

It is such an honor to have an exhibition and share my life work with people in my hometown Sapporo, Hokkaido — where I grew up surrounded by beautiful nature, taught and learned the deep world Japanese calligraphy.  I was so grateful, in owe, to perform my art in front of not only the “dosanko” curious minds, but also my childhood friends and family, calligraphy peers, professors, masters and members of the calligraphy association.  Hokkaido is always my home, where nurtured me into who I am now. I am determined to continue my journey to share the beauty of Japanese traditional art and spirituality with the world.

    SHIFT_preview
SHIFT.JP.ORG, a trilingual creative culture magazine, featured my solo exhibition on the front page. Thank you SHIFT for such beautiful words about my work, and my collaborative performances with Corey Fuller. English version is going to be published soon.

Exhibition runs until April 30th, 2016 at Cross Hotel Sapporo, Hokkaido. If you have a chance to visit Hokkaido, please stop by the exhibit and enjoy the expressive shades of sumi-ink and strokes along with the poem I’ve written for the concept of the show.

When I was back in Japan last year, I was interviewed by T’s Pool Magazine, issued by Takara Leben, a mansion developer company in based in Tokyo. I received a copy of the magazine in mail a few weeks ago, here in Berkeley. My article was spanned over the first 4 pages as well as the cover of the magazine on its January 2015 issue. Wow, I feel very flattered. I was also commissioned to write a kanji character for the New Year – something that symbolizes my wish for how I want my and everyone’s year of 2015 to be. I chose “耀”, which means “shine” in Japanese, wishing that your year to be flourishing and shining with full of creativity and energy.

As I was reading through the interview, revisiting memories of my past works, I realize how fortunate and thankful I am to be surrounded by many talented creative minds who I have collaborated with to create beautiful art, and broadened my horizons; who share passions to strive for the better and the world unseen.

I hope that sharing my work with people in the world also inspire others to create something new – like how others always do to me. I have been working on many new exciting projects and commission works since I moved into the new atelier, so hope to share them with you soon!
