Nippon Kobo Vol.2 ~ Ma (): The Space Between All Things ~

From Grammy Award-winning Silkroad Ensemble associate artistic director Haruka Fujii and Academy Award-nominated animator Dice Tsutsumi comes Nippon Kobo, an immersive cultural experience of contemporary Japanese music and culture. Join us at our second season opening event: an evening of chamber music and calligraphy with a program centered around the theme of Ma, the Japanese aesthetic of space between all things.

After a successful inaugural year 2024-2025 full of creativity, conversation, and smiles over three sold-out events, Nippon Kobo is excited to announce Nippon Kobo Vol.2: Ma ~ Space between all things ~, the flagship event opening Nippon Kobo’s second performing arts season on November 2nd, 2025. This event will showcase a chamber music program by Japanese composers, real-time calligraphy performance by Aoi Yamaguchi, and a special talk by Myriam Sas – (Professor of Comparative Literature and Film & Media at the University of California, Berkeley). The program also spotlights the world premiere performance of a new work by Hiroya Miura for chamber ensemble and calligrapher. Along with leading Japanese artists, local musicians, creators, and entrepreneurs, we look forward to sharing the Japanese aesthetic of Ma.

Nippon Kobo was founded by a small group of passionate, award-winning artists from the San Francisco Bay Area who believe that in-person artistic and cultural collaborations are vital to a healthy community. Nippon Kobo is an event series that brings together diverse artists, creators, entrepreneurs, and the local community through collaborations that combine chamber music with contemporary Japanese culture, including art and food. The organization’s mission is to build a new community where people meet, learn, and experience cross-cultural dialogue through curated music concerts paired with contemporary Japanese art and culture.

  • Art Installation & Exclusive Dinner Event at Naked Kitchen coming Saturday

    NakedKitchen_banner

Integrating my art into an amazing dining experience – it is something I have been working on for a long time. Early summer, I was introduced to this place called “Naked Kitchen” on Valencia St & 20th in the Mission, SF. You might not notice this place from the outside, but it’s a hidden gem – beautiful SF’s traditional Victorian style home with two dining rooms, beautiful kitchen and heated wood deck. It is a creative underground dinner events featuring both renowned & up-and-coming chefs every week. I just love their philosophy:

“For everything to remain as is, everything must change.

    – Giuseppe di Lampedusa

Naked Kitchen is about embracing transparency.

Courage to step out from comfort into a space of innovation regardless of the risk.

Conscious of our actions while holding the best intentions for others and the environment.

Change as a driving force for creativity.

Having met the owner Kong Son, who is open to new ideas and dive into untapped field, I have decided to release my new series of abstract calligraphy paintings, titled “Soundscape” which I have been working on since last year. You can think of this event as a combination of art opening and a special course dinner, and relaxed lounge time afterwards. Yes it’s June already, a month for Gemini’s! June 17th is my birthday – so I’m going to celebrate with favorite people including *YOU*, it will be lovely to have great energies before a big journey. This memorable dinner will be presented by Anthony Yang from Michael Mina. Even if you can’t make it to the dinner, we will open the door for you if you’d like to swing by for a drink, hang out and enjoy art – it’s going to be a speaskeasy style, so please let me know if you are planning on coming! You can check the password on Facebook event invitation page or email me at info@aoiyamaguchi.com  – I can send you the password to your email!

I’m going to write more about “Soundscape” series in the next post. It’s an ongoing project, I will keep working on this series for the larger project in the future.

I have been dreaming about having an intimate dining experience surrounded by my artworks, with amazing food made with care, while favorite music serenades the space, with my dear friends. I am very looking forward to see you there, and share this special moment together.

  • [Upcoming] An Exclusive Night of Sebastian Plano Solo Concert + Live Visuals

Sebastian Plano, an amazing multi-instrumentalist & composer, whom I have been working on a collaborative performance project with, launched a Kickstarter campaign to support his two upcoming albums. In support of this Kickstarter campaign, Sebastian will be presenting you an hour live performance, including new songs from his two upcoming albums. I will be performing live visuals projected on the wall of this beautiful venue, inspired by his music.

    About Sebastian Plano:

Born in a musical family in Argentina, Sebastian Plano is a classically-trained contemporary music composer / multi-instrumentalist. Exploring his strong roots in folk music, Tango, and enchanted by the resonance of electronic music, he began to interpret his imagination into own sounds at the age of 12.

Besides his main instrument, cello, Plano skillfully meshes the sounds of the piano, bandoneon, percussion, and his vocal, and creates entirely new soundscapes. Its passionate yet graceful melody paints a cinematic landscape of the world unseen – allures you to be lost in the pleasant waves of divine sounds, and leaves you sway within a dream filled with reminiscent moments.

Reviewed as one of the strongest contemporary classical albums of the year, Plano’s debut album “The Arrhythmical Part of Hearts” has gained international acclaim placing him as one of the pioneers in looking for new sonorous combining classical and electronic elements. He says: “I am looking for innovation; variations and mixture of genres, the combination of known sonorities making the new scope within a composition.” Plano is currently working on an EP in collaboration with Jeffrey Zeigler from Kronos Quartet, and his second album “Impetus” is scheduled to be released in early 2013.

  • [Upcoming] "UNIBIRTH": New Conceptual Calligraphy Performance at ArtPad SF

I am excited to announce that I was invited to perform a new conceptual calligraphy art performance at San Francisco’s contemporary art fair ArtPadSF on the night of Saturday, May 19th from 7:30pm. Big thanks and love to Mike Cuffe, founder / editor in chief of Warholian.com.

The new piece is titled “UNIBIRTH” – Unibirth is a live performance art project which is conceptualized, directed and performed by Aoi Yamaguchi, in collaboration with Argentinian contemporary composer Sebastian Plano, contemporary dancers Celine Alwyn and Emmaly Wiederholt. Inspired by unifying concepts of “universe” and “birth”, Unibirth celebrates the reincarnation of lives that exist in nature and signifies the infinite cycle of the universe, incorporating the physical movement of calligraphy, contemporary dance, sounds and visuals. The dancer represents the spirit of humanity – the music, representing the earth’s ensemble, and the poetry, written on the bodies and garments by the artist, awaken the spirit from long hibernation. Blessed in the brush strokes and divine sounds, the newborn spirit will be sublimed into the nature’s resonance.
