    [vc_row][vc_column][rs_image_block align=”align-center” image=”8402″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][rs_special_text]VALENTINES DAY WEEKEND CALLIGRAPHY WORKSHOP:
    LOVE LETTERS FOR COUPLES[/rs_special_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Celebrate Valentine’s Day Weekend with your Partner with Japanese Calligraphy

On the Valentine’s Day weekend, I’m excited and looking forward to welcome you at my atelier for an intimate, romantic, COUPLES-ONLY workshop to celebrate love!

In the Heian period in Japan (794–1185 CE), aristocrats exchanged love letters and poetry written in calligraphy as acts of courtship. To express their love, the quality of the calligraphy, cleverness of the verses, and the quality of the paper were all considered, and the exchange could lead to a meeting after dark.

During this COUPLES-ONLY 2 hour workshop, you will be seated facing your partner on our tranquil tatami mat floor in the atelier. Each of you will practice writing a love-themed Kanji character selected by the instructor, while thinking about your partner.  You will then create a love-infused calligraphy artwork on a special handmade washi shikishi board. We will also provide you with a greeting card with an artwork by Aoi Yamaguchi, for you to hand write a message to your partner. At the end of the session, you will exchange the artwork with your partner. It will be an unforgettable moment to see your partner’s love infused in calligraphy.

Join us for a romantic, unique way to express love to your loved one!

Kakizome is a wonderful Japanese tradition where you can take a moment to center yourself with good thoughts and wishes for the fresh beginning of the year. Let’s write an auspicious word for your new year’s resolution in calligraphy, and start the New Year in good spirit.

    *

Kakizome (書き初め) is the term for the first calligraphy writing of the new year, traditionally performed on the second day of January. This event is also called 吉書 (kissho: good luck calligraphy), 初硯 (hatsu-suzuri: first ink well) and 試筆 (shi-hitsu: challenge writing).

Traditionally, water called “wakamizu” (若水) used to make the Sumi ink for Kakizome must be the one taken from the well on the New Year’s day, which is believed to be pure and holy. Wishing for a good luck for the year, we write Kakizome facing towards “ehou” (恵方), the fortunate direction for the year based on the local zodiac. People write auspicious kanji characters or a short poetry, such as haiku or tanka, or their favorite characters that symbolize one’s wishes for the New Year.

On the New Year’s day, following the tradition, pour water in a container and bring it with you to the class. Don’t worry if you were not able to – we have extra wakamizu saved for you. During the workshop, you will rub the ink stick with your wakamizu to create fresh sumi ink, and write calligraphy of words of your choice from a selected list provided. We will go over the basics from how to hold the brush to how to control the brush, the balance between the mind and body, understanding the structure and meaning of Japanese characters, basic brush techniques and possibilities of sumi ink. You will practice on standard hanshi paper, and then work on a final piece on a long yatsugiri paper. You will take home your finished calligraphy artworks, an ink stick, and an artwork folder that you will be binding during the class.

    This workshop is for youth & adult beginners.[/vc_column_text][rs_space height=”45px”][symple_divider][rs_space height=”45px”][rs_special_text tag=”h3″ font_color=”#000000″]

I moved into the studio in April this year, and have spent the last 7 months creating the new furniture for the studio in collaboration with my sister, Yui Yamaguchi who’s trained in industrial design and woodworking in Japan, to make this vision come true – a space that functions as my art studio, showroom and a workshop. People can learn, create and share the beauty of Japanese calligraphy, combining traditional and modern methods in the a tranquil and nurturing space. I designed the space inspired by the calligraphy school where I studied Japanese calligraphy throughout my childhood, and the nature of my hometown Hokkaido, embracing the warmth of wood highlighting the beauty of its grains and natural edges. I will keep working on updating the studio space in the coming months, but I’d love to open the door and share where I’m at now before the end of the year of 2024.

I will have a selected series of art pieces from the past and new collections, prints and stationaries will be available for sale just in time for the holidays, and you can learn more about and sign up for upcoming classes in 2025. Hope you had a wonderful start of the year so far. I’m offering the New Year’s tradition – Kakizome workshops both in-person and on online.

Kakizome (書き初め) is the term for the first calligraphy writing of the new year, which is traditionally performed on the second day of January in Japan. This event is also called 吉書 (kissho: good luck calligraphy), 初硯 (hatsu-suzuri: first ink well) and 試筆 (shi-hitsu: challenge writing). Traditionally, water called wakamizu (若水) is used to make the Sumi ink for Kakizome which must be the one taken from the well on the New Year’s day. It is believed to be pure and holy. Wishing for good luck for the year, we write Kakizome facing towards ehou (恵方), the fortunate direction for the year based on the local zodiac. People write auspicious kanji characters that symbolize one’s wishes for the New Year or short poetry, such as haiku or tanka.

Registrations for online Kakizome workshop are now open! I’d love to do this kakizome in the authentic way with you, so we’ll follow the tradition – you will make your own sumi ink with holy water called wakamizu taken on the day of the New Year. Sign up by January 11th with “Ink Stick Set” to receive the set in mail! SEASONS is my series of Japanese calligraphy workshops focusing on the innate beauty of the transition from one season to another captured in poetry. There are hundreds of kigo (季語, “season word”), which is a word or phrase associated with a particular season used in traditional forms of Japanese poetry. The December session, in collaboration with Tea at Shiloh, will be (kogarashi) or Winter Wind. We will embrace the cold winter wind through tea pairing and Japanese calligraphy.

The evening will have two parts: First, guests will be introduced to the artist’s selection of haiku poems with (winter wind) as the chosen kigo to inspire, which will be paired with a cup of selected tea by Tea at Shiloh. After having our body and spirit warmed up, we will dive into the practice of Japanese calligraphy. We will go over a brief history of Japanese calligraphy,  calligraphy tools and supplies, as well as proper posture to focus on the balance of mind and body. You will begin to explore how the self is reflected in your own writing. Guests will practice the character “凩” on up to 20 sheets of hanshi paper and take their own finished artworks home as souvenir from the evening.

This workshop is designed for adult beginners. No prior experience or knowledge of Japanese is necessary.
